With the campaign period for local officials barely a month away, the first elected official to be shot dead was a barangay captain of a mountainous sitio of barangay Kawang in Buenavista town.
At the height of election period gun ban, another shooting incident shocked the town of Buenavista, especially that the victim was a barangay captain.
The 41-year-old barangay captain of Kawang, Buenavista, Danilo Torejas, had just arrived home from his farm at 6:45 in the morning last Monday when unidentified men shot him several times.
The victim died on the spot.
PNP Prov'l Director Constantino Barot, Jr. told the Chronilce last night there is no proof yet to officially declare the killing as election related. However, being an elected official and with campaign period about the start, authorities are focusing on leads that the incident could be election related.
The slain barangay official could be a supporter of Buenavista Mayor Tirol.
Buenavista chief of police, Inspector Nestor Rebosura, also said that shortly prior to the incident, six persons were seen heading towards his farm.
This made the investigators suspect that those men must be the ones responsible.
Investigators are still determining the caliber of the firearms used and the motive in the killing.
A team from Camp Dagohoy are already assisting in the investigation.
However, the investigators find it too early to classify the incident as election-related.
