Unlike in the last local elections, three years ago, it will be a very quiet election in the city.
With the absence of a complete slate of the opposition, the re-election of Mayor Baba Yap is a walk in the park. In fact, there is a political forecast that the team of Mayor Yap and reelectionist Vice Mayor Jose Antonio Veloso might make a landslide 10- victory for the members of the City Council.
The first termer 38-year old mayor who is enjoying his popularity got a voter’s preference of 88% in the latest “Pre-Election Round” Bohol Poll of the Holy Name University Center for Research and Publication. His opponents, Barangay Captain Arlene Karaan and former City Councilor Edgar Kapirig pooled only 10% and 2%, respectively. There were reports that Karaan was asked to file her candidacy only to be replaced by former Mayor Dan Lim. However, this failed as no party was willing to take-in Lim. The former mayor who is the uncle of Mayor Yap, showed up during the last two weeks to campaign hard for Karaan.
Yap’s running mate, Veloso also got a high of 93% voter’s preference against his lone opponent, Dr. Hontanosas who got 7%.
The Yap-Veloso team includes seven re-electionist city kagawads, namely Philip Besas, Jojo Bompat, Dulce Glovasa, Augustinus Gonzaga, Adam Jala, Jerry Pabe, and Alberta Torralba while their newcomers in the slate are Eliezer Borja, Jonas Cacho and Greggy Gatal.
Karaan has no running mate for vice mayor and has only five bets for city kagawads. They are Shaene Karaan, Kagawad Lucille Lagunay, Pat Ruiz, Barangay Captain Leda Saco and Barangay Captain Jun Telmo. Other city indpendent bets are Dodong Polinar, Toto Siason and Beboth Torralba
With tomorrow’s election, Yap and Veloso tandem is expected to easily grab victory unlike the previous election where it was a tough fight among Mayor Yap, Dr. Abe Lim and Kagawad Gonzaga.
