NBI CRACKSÂ P5.5 M SWINDLE
Moving from its drug-busting record here, the NBI (National Bureau of Investigation) cracked two swindling groups here with a potential P5.5MÂ Â squeeze on hapless individuals.
The “big fish” who fell on May 7 was an alleged P5-m jewelry swindler who operates in the city- Isabelle Undalon Alferez who is now facing charges in court.
Ten days later the NBI collared a Loon couple for allegedly operating a P.5M feed scam in the Visayas specifically in Cebu but later settled in Loon. The two, Arelyn and Herman Oyson Jr. is facing two counts of estafa.
Meantime, in the NBI bag was an alleged lending collector who misappropriated P90,000 worth of his collections named Jasyson Lagahit now also with a court case.
The NBI concluded that “surveillance and investigative work paid off for the local NBI office in Bohol” as reported by lawyer-agent Archie Albao who reported for Atty. Renan Oliva- NBI agent in charge- to the Provincial Peace and Order Council.
During the one month period in May, the NBI also nabbed three persons in the drug campaign and some assorted drug paraphernalia in Ubay, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition in Carmen , illegal gambling in Tagbilaran and child abuse in San Miguel town.
NBI CHIEF TO BE REAPPOINTED?
Because of the success of the NBI here and other parts of the country in many high profile anti-criminal action, Boholano NBI chief Virgilio Mendez is reportedly being pushed by many quarters to be re appointed under the new Duterte administration.
Mendez is a low profile but effective crime buster who is the first career NBI man to man the top post. In his wake the budget of the NBI had been more than doubled from the original P500-M when Mendez stepped in.
His appointment during the Aquino regime was one of the most well-received ones.
TRAINED MEDICO LEGAL NEEDED
Meantime, Gov. Edgar Chatto as head of the PPOC (council for peace and order) asked the DILG to formally request for the assignment of more medico legal doctors here to conduct among others, autopsies for murder or homicide cases.
The request letter will be forwarded to the NBI and the Camp Crame Crime Laboratory.
According to the Chief of the Bohol Crime Laboratory , SPO2 Florentino Diola -the PPOC that NBI and PNP-trained medico legal officer is required to do such job- which Bohol does not have. The lone medico legal officer in Bohol, Dr. Gregorio Salardo is assigned as a Rural Health Office in Danao town and is not under the PNP.
PPOC member Romeo Teruel suggested that the NBI and the PNP can also train local doctors for medico legal proficiency to facilitate crime investigation here.
CASE IN POINT
The glaring hole in the justice system in the country was highlighted in the case of the defenseless woman probably raped and then murdered in her boarding house. Her hands were tied and her garments were partially pulled down.
But without an appropriate medico legal officer, there was not much that can be done in giving the murdered woman her full justice.
