The president of the Liga ng mga Barangay in the province said that he is in favor of calls to abolish the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK).

According to ex-officio Provincial Board Member Romulo Cepedusa, he agrees with House Speaker Pantaleon Alavarez who said that the SK does not have significant functions but its members are being paid.

Following the statement, Alvarez announced that the House of Representatives is eyeing the abolition of the SK.

For his part, Cepedusa said that the abolition would keep the youth from having to witness dirty politics.

He also noted that the SK members’ academics are likely to suffer if they engage in politics.

The representation of the youth would not be affected as the barangay council covers the SK committee, particularly the committee on sports, Cepedusa added.

Meanwhile, the postponement of the October barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections has been proposed amid fears that narcopolitics would influence the choice of officials.

However, Cepedusa is optimistic that the polls would push through, noting that the elections would allow deserving candidates to replace errant barangay officials.

He said that there are a slew of barangay officials who need to replaced, particularly those who are involved in illegal drug activities. (Allen Doydora)
