Starting November 2, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) in Tagbilaran City will start processing driver’s licenses with a five-year validity, an official said yesterday.

Erwin Patalinghug, city LTO registrar, said that the upgrade from the three-year driver’s licenses was made in accordance with the directive of President Rodrigo Duterte to lessen license renewals.

However, motorists in the city expressed mixed reactions regarding the development.

While some lauded the initiative as it would entail lesser expense and effort in queuing to have licenses renewed, others said that the LTO in the city is unprepared for such a development.

This, after the LTO has continued to lag in issuing driver’s licenses, particularly plastic ones.

According to Patalinghug, the LTO currently can only provide receipts to those who will have their licenses renewed.

He admitted that there is no definite date on when plastic licenses will be available again.

The LTO office in Tagbilaran City has been on the receiving end of various complaints from clients who have paid complete fees but have purportedly not been getting their money’s worth  in terms of service from the agency. (Allen Doydora)
