A policeman in Corella accidentally injured a detainee on Sunday evening after dropping his service firearm which went off as it hit the ground, said the town’s police chief.

According to Corella police chief Insp. Joseph Lopena, a cement fragment which broke off due to the gunshot punctured inmate Reynaldo Rebuta, Jr.’s leg.

Lopena said that the incident happened at around 10 p.m. when PO2 Esmeraldo Reluba went to the police station’s restroom and accidentally dropped his gun.

Following the incident, Rebuta remained in stable condition but had to be given immediate medical attention.

The Corella policemen were having a Christmas party during the accident, said the police chief.

According to Lopena, an investigation will be conducted as Reluba was under the influence of alcohol during the incident.

Reluba has been disarmed pending the investigation. (Allen Doydora)
