An unidentified suspect allegedly tried to extort P60,000 from an 82-year-old woman by threatening the victim through a text message on Saturday.
The victim, identified as Trifunia Cuyno, a Tagbilaran City resident, was told to hand over the said amount on January 31 to two armed men with tattoos.
According to Cuyno’s granddaughter, Lourdes Bautista, 38, the victim told her about the text message on the same day prompting her to immediately report the incident to the police.
Bautista said that the suspect told Cuyno that she will not be harmed if she paid the said sum.
For its part, the city police which started a probe on the case noted that the incident could be another modus operandi alongside other schemes recently used to get money from unsuspecting victims.
The authorities also urged the public to report similar cases to help them in their ongoing investigation.
Last week, two women in the city, aged 60 and 53, lost more than a P100,000 allegedly through an ATM card-switching modus. (Allen Doydora)
