The Commission on Elections (Comelec) continued its preparations for the Barangay and Sanguniang Kabataan elections despite no legislation from Congress indicating whether the electoral activity will push through or not.
In a press statement, the Comelec on Wednesday said that the filing of certificates of candidacy (COC) is scheduled to start on September 23 and end on September 30, 2017.
According to Atty. Ariel Selma, Tagbilaran City election officer, the same preparations are being prepared locally even without a definite schedule for the barangay polls.
Selma expressed optimism that the elections will push through on October 23 as he cited the new order to proceed with the filing of COCs.
The Comelec official admitted that government resources and finances will have gone to waste should the elections be deferred.
However, Selma said that some of the preparations made this year can still be utilized for when the polls push through.
Local Comelec personnel are now categorizing voters qualified to cast their ballots and whose names will be announced next week.
But while preparations are ongoing, the Comelec is still awaiting a decision from Congress on when the polls will be held. (A. Doydora)
