Buenavista Mayor Ronald “Sampol” Tirol was reportedly killed following a gun attack against him at a cockpit arena in the town at past 3 p.m. on Sunday.
Tirol was shot multiple times by a still unidentified gunman while he was sitting at a corner of the cockpit arena, said Chief Insp. Rully Lauron, chief of the Buenavista Police Station.
The mayor was hit several times in the head, added Lauron.
The mayor was still rushed to a hospital in Inabanga but reportedly succumbed to gunshot wounds.
According to Lauron, the gunman who appeared to be in his 30s suddenly went near Tirol and shot him.
Tirol’s bodyguard was not in the vicinity as he was asked to run an errand for the mayor, said Lauron.
The assailant then fled the area and quickly boarded a getaway motorcycle which was driven by another unidentified suspect.
Police have launched a hot pursuit operation against the suspects. (A. Doydora)
