An 81-year-old woman was allegedly beaten to death by her own son, who is reportedly suffering from mental illness, inside their home in Guindulman on Monday night.
The suspect, 39-year-old Efren Bernadas, allegedly assaulted his mother Evarista Bernadas, a widow, after he felt discomfort due to heartburn, said SPO1 Ranulfo Asilo of the Guindulman Police Station.
Efren was immediately arrested and was charged with parricide on Wednesday.
“Adto na time, murag gitukaran sa iyang kabuhi unya nahimong bayolente na kaayo kay sa una kuno og mo tokar, magyawyaw ra pero karon ni abot sa pagpangulata nga maoy gikamatay sa biktima,” Asilo said.
Based on initial police investigation, Evarista asked her other son to fetch a manghihilot (traditional healer) to attend to Efren.
However, when he returned, he saw that Efren had already covered Evarista who was already lifeless with a blanket.
Evarista’s face was severely swollen while her eyes appeared to have been pushed back due to the impact of Efren’s attack, said Asilo.
According to Asilo, it was the first time that Efren assaulted his mother. (AD)
