Ten inmates died while a city jail warden was injured in a grenade explosion inside the Paranaque City jail Thursday night.
Paranaque City Mayor Edwin Olivares told a Metro Manila Council meeting held at the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Office in Makati City that the explosion occurred at around 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
Supt. Jenny Tecson, Southern Police District (SPD) spokesperson, identified the dead inmates as Waren Manampen, Ronald Domdom, Rodel Domdom, Danilo Pineda, Joseph Villasor, Oliver Sarreal, Jeremy Flores, Jonathan Ilas, and Chinese nationals Jacky Huang and Yonghan Cai.
Eight of the inmates, including the two Chinese nationals, were facing drug-related cases, while the other two were charged with robbery.
Tecson said the city jail warden, Supt. Gerald Bantag, was rushed to an undisclosed hospital due to shrapnel wounds in the face and legs and is still not available to give any statement.
Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) officials said that except for the two foreign nationals, who died on arrival at the Ospital ng Parañaque, the rest of the inmates died on the spot.
Authorities are still investigating the incident. (PNA)
