The Tagbilaran City Jail could match -up with the country’s most congested jails showing an 800% congestion rate as of yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Bohol District jail also has an excess of 274 inmates causing a major congestion as well.

Both major detention centers are expected to congest further considering the continued arrest of drug suspects here.

The City Jail was designed to accommodate 30 inmates. With its present headcount of 274 inmates, the jail is in excess of 244 inmates.  The congestion is making it appear like “hell” with the inmates sleeping elbow to elbow just to get a space to rest at night. Statistics showed that of the 274 inmates, 70 % of which committed drug-related crimes.

Jail Senior Inspector Mark Anthony Omega confirmed that one of the inmates is stricken with tuberculosis. He said two nurses are hired in order to check the health condition of the inmates.

The jail is manned by 24 personnel under the watch of JSI Omega said the food allowance per inmate is P60/day, P50 from BJMP and P10 from the city government.

Meanwhile, the Bohol District Jail which was recently awarded as the best in Central Visayas was also found out by The Chronicle to be congested as well. Three of the inmates are inflicted with tuberculosis.

The jail is accommodating 724 inmates when its total capacity is only good for 450 inmates or an excess of 274 inmates. This latest count came after 16 inmates were transferred to New Bilibid Prison while six inmates were brought to the Leyte Regional Penal Colony.

Sixty-five percent of the inmates are facing drug-related cases.

Jail Chief Inspector Jose Rusylvi Abueva admitted that 95% of the inmates are awaiting court decisions on their cases.

Inmates are getting higher meal allowance at P100 per day (P50 from BJMP and P50 from the provincial government). The jail is manned by 28 jail guards with three nurses.
