The town of Ubay is experiencing severe shortage in water supply due to the continued lack of rains and prevalence of extreme heat.

According to accounts of Ubay residents aired through DYRD Balita, the water shortage has been felt by several barangays of the town since last week.

The primary cause pinpointed by residents is the lack of water supply from the Ubay Water System Cooperative (UWASCO), one of the main sources of water in Ubay particularly its central barangays, which has dried up.

According to Zaldy Tovillas, UWASCO administrative personnel, its dam has not been able to release water since August 30, 2016, due to the lack of rains in Ubay and neighboring towns.

Tovillas told DYRD Balita that eight barangays covered by the UWASCO including the villages of Poblacion, Tapon, Achila, Bood, Calanggaman, Fatima, Katarungan and Tipolo are severely hit by the water crisis.

He said that the UWASCO is already in talks with the National Irrigation Administration noting that they will be purchasing water from the Capayas Dam which will be provided to the affected villages.

The Ubay authorities are working to have water from the Capayas Dam flow toward the UWASCO’s dam.

For its part, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office in Ubay has been moving to ration water to affected barangays. (Allen Doydora)
