The Panglao local government unit (LGU) will shut down the operations or not renew business permits of resorts and hotels in the town that do not properly segregate their waste.

This was the warning issued by Panglao Mayor Leonila Montero following the strict implementation of guidelines at the new Alburquerque Cluster Sanitary Landfill which only accepts residual waste.

Montero said that Panglao has been assigned to dump its waste at Albrquerque and will start disposing its garbage at the said sanitary landfill soon.

However, the residual garbage dumpsite will return unsegregated waste to their sources, prompting the Panglao LGU to strictly implement the segregation at source policy.

According to Montero, 10 resorts have already been issued notices regarding the measure.

Montero said that the policy was implemented in 2013 but many resort and hotel owners have not been observing it.

She noted that most businesses owned by foreigners are the ones committing violations such as disposing garbage without proper segregation.

The town, one of the country’s top tourist destinations, has also been grappling with problems involving garbage being disposed in beach areas and excessive noise, particularly at night.

Montero said that two establishments have already been shut down after having committed the said violations.

The LGU started its information drive on proper waste segregation as population and number of businesses in the town are expected to maintain growth.

Panglao is also projected to house more businesses and residents after the completion of the New Bohol Airport in the town. (Allen Doydora)
