The provincial government has taken measures to pay tribute to Anos Fonacier, considered as Father of Bohol Tourism, by renaming the Panglao Circumferential Rd. in his honor.

During the regular session of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan on Tuesday, a resolution was pushed through the Provincial Board’s public works and highways committee to name the said road as the Panglao Island Anos Fonacier Circumferential Road in honor of Fonacier who recently passed away.

The SP also sought the support of the province’s three congressmen in passing a law that would rename the national road in Panglao.

For his part, Governor Edgar Chatto, formally appealed to House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez and First Distric Congressman Rene Relampagos to extend support in the initiative.

Chatto also asked the local government units of Dauis and Panglao, which constitutes Panglao Island, to pass resolutions supporting the proposed measure.

The Panglao Circumferential Road was a provincial road before it became a national road through a law authored by Chatto when he was still in Congress.

According to Chatto, it was Fonacier who suggested to him to turn the Panglao Circumferential Rd. into a national road in anticipation of the New Bohol Airport.

Fonacier passed away on September 12 after battling throat and prostate cancers and other ailments.

Fonacier, who was 90, established the Bohol Beach Club in 1984, prior to Bohol’s rise as one of the top tourist destinations in the country. (Rey Tutas)
