At more than a thousand, the whopping number of drug surrenderees in Ubay was put to good use by the town’s authorities.
The large group of self-confessed drug personalities was tasked by the local government of Ubay to plant 2,000 seeds as part of a community service program for drug users and pushers in the town.
Ubay police chief Senior Insp. Roland Lavisto told DYRD Balita that the seeds of assorted trees were provided by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
The seeds were planted across four hectares of government-owned land in Barangay Calanggaman, Ubay late September.
According to Lavisto, the surrenderees were accompanied by members of Philippine Army’s 47th Infantry Batalllion and Regional Public Safety Company-7.
The police chief said that the initiative was part of the government’s efforts to monitor and keep the drug personalities from resuming their illegal activities.
Almost every week, drug surrenderees have also been urged to join activities such as community service programs and drug symposiums.
They have also been invited to join religious activities such as masses.
The town of Ubay has a total of 1,694 drug personalities who surrendered through Oplan Tokhang.
Fourteen have been arrested in various anti-drug operations so far for continuing their involvement in illegal drug activities. (Rey Tutas)
