The Bohol District Jail has launched an investigation on the purported unauthorized use of a cellphone by an inmate held on drug charges inside the detention facility in Tagbilaran City.
According to J/Chief Insp. Jose Rusylvi Abueva, BDJ warden, they intend to find out how detainee Armando Digal contacted his ex-wife from inside the prison without the authorities’ knowledge.
Abueva said that detainees are allowed to make phone calls but with permission from BDJ officials.
He explained that even BDJ personnel are not allowed to carry cellphones inside the facility particularly in jail cells.
In the ongoing probe, Digal’s ex-wife may be summoned by the BDJ for her to officially convey her statement regarding the allegation.
According to Abueva, he had received reports that Digal was planning to post bail which may have been the purpose of his call to his ex-wife.
However, the jail official has no knowledge on Digal’s reasons for allegedly issuing a threat to his former wife.
Digal’s ex-wife previously alerted authorities regarding the incident through the media as she was baffled that the inmate was still able to contact her.
Digal was arrested by National Bureau of Investigation agents on June 7, 2016 in barangay Jimilian, Loboc.
He yielded 11.3421 grams of shabu with an estimated value of P200,000, a .45 caliber pistol and live ammunition.
Digal is a relative of Erico Digal, a suspected drug lord based in Carmen who reportedly fled the country when the government launched its intensified drive against illegal drug activities.
The jailed Digal also reportedly served as the driver of the alleged drug lord. (Allen Doydora)
