Hard training, discipline and desire propelled national training pool member, Richelle Piollo to win three golds in three separate wrestling events which highlighted the Pre-Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games which ended Friday at Harrison Plaza.

Piollo, 23, a native of Loay, Bohol but representing Mandaluyong Team sterling performances enable her to rule the women’s traditional classic and freestyle 52 kilogram matches.

The Bohol pride, Piollo on Friday afternoon capitalized her tenacious throwing techniques overpowered to win the gold in the traditional classic 52 event by beating Riza Domenios (Manila), who settled for silver.

Before dusk, Piollo, a graduating electronics and communications student of Mapua Institute of Technology (MIT) and two-year member of the national pool captured the gold in the freestyle 52 kg outpointing navywoman Grace Loberanes, who settled for silver while Jiah Pingot of Tagum took the bronze.

“Discipline, hard training and focus drove me to win,” said the jubilant Piollo, a veteran of three international tournaments that include her match against Japanese and German nationals,who currently the world top seeds in separate weight categories (48 kg and 52 kg).

Davao’s top wrestler Chino Sy made his provincemates proud by ruling the men’s traditional classic and freestyle 82 kgs., respectively.

Other top winners in the men’s division include Jason Baucas (Benguet) who bagged the gold in the traditional freestyle (68 kg) outpointing Joseph Lawrence Flores (Yawyan Club), who took the silver while John Rey Larena of Taytay settled for the bronze.

The Qualifying tournament supported by Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) is aimed at identifying the athletes that will join Team Philippines in the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games which will be held Ashgabat, Turkmenistan from September 17 to 27. (Primo P. Agatep/PNA)
