Cases of dengue are monitored to be increasing amid the dry spell interrupted by light rains in every event of a
weather disturbance passing the Philippine Area of Responsibility intensifying the southwest monsoon.

This manifested in the continued monitoring on areas with sudden increase of dengue cases, one of them is the town of Sagbayan.

Sagbayan now ranks third in the list of areas with the most number of dengue cases in the entire Region 7.

The Provincial Health Office already recorded 129 dengue cases from Sagbayan from January to August this year.
The rapid increase accumulated in July to August, with one death, prompted health officials to declare dengue outbreak in Sagbayan.

According to Fritzie Olaguer, Provincial Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit coordinator at the PHO, Sagbayan is number 1 in Bohol and third in Central Visayas as to the number of dengue cases as of end of August.

Cebu City still tops the list with 630 cases, followed by Lapulapu City with 133 cases.

Tagbilaran City only ranked fifth in the region with 107 cases.

Olaguer further said that one of the factors in the rapid increase of dengue cases in Sagbayan are the water containers left unattended in houses abandoned after being damaged during the earthquake.

The water containers left uncovered and unattended had collected rain during the recent downpour, and became breeding grounds of dengue-carrying mosquitos.

The Provincial Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit continues monitoring Sagbayan and the nearby towns as it rained again last night brought about by the weather disturbance affecting the northern part of the country.
On the other hand, the dengue scare erupted again in Tagbilaran City as cases became notable at City Central Elementary School.

Head Teacher-3 Marilou Pondoc of City Central Elementary School confirmed seven cases affecting their pupils just in the month of July.

Since then, teachers initiated clean-up drives in the campus made more often than the usual routine to prevent the Sagbayan experience from happening in the city.

For its part, Bantay Bayan Foundation Incorporated (BBFI)-Bohol Chapter, led by DYRD’s Jun Gutierez, scheduled a clean-up drive at the school today to help the teachers and parents prevent the spread of dengue virus among the pupils.

Teams of BBFI earlier conducted rounds of clean-up drives at Sagbayan elementary schools where 45 cases recorded in the town came from.

Health officials of Sagbayan declared dengue outbreak following the rapid increase of cases that started in schools at Poblacion areas and spread to the neighboring barangays in the towns and areas in adjacent towns like Catigbian.
