Former Rep. Roberto “Bob” Cajes is running back for congressman in the 2nd congressional district.
This breaking news was confirmed yesterday by the Liberal Party (LP) officialdom.
Reports said that the endorsement of Cajes to run as LP’s congressional bet was signed by Gov. Edgar Chatto, Vice Gov. Concepcion Lim and Rep. Rene Relampagos.
The said endorsement executed by the local LP committee was hand carried to Manila by Rep. Relampagos who will submit it to the national LP headquarters for approval.
Cajes’ congressional bid came as a surprise to some sectors as earlier reports said that the former Bohol solon was originally set to be off from politics in next year’s election. Instead of filing his bid for the 2016 polls, Cajes was reportedly interested to be given the ambassadorial post abroad.
Cajes, served three terms as congressman after which he slid down to serve as mayor of Trinidad.
The former Bohol solon lost to newcomer Rep. Aris Aumentado (who succeeded his late father, Rep. Erico Aumentado) during the 2013 polls by a margin of 29,563 votes. Aumentado polled 99,691 votes against Cajes’ 70,128 votes. Cajes won only in his hometown of Trinidad.
The endorsement of Cajes to run for solon might abort the plan of Board Member Gerry Garcia to run for congresswoman against the young Aumentado.
Asked to comment on Cajes’ congressional bid, Rep. Aumentado said he welcomes the “rematch” with Cajes for next year’s election.
