Governor Edgar Chatto, who sits as the chair of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDDRMC), called for vigilance among the public against flashfloods and landslides this week.

Chatto issued the warning on Wednesday amid the presence of Tropical Depression “Domeng” in waters off Visayas and Mindanao.

Domeng intensified from a low pressure area on Tuesday but is not expected to make landfall.

The governor directed all mayors of the province, the PDRRMC and MDRRMC to prepare to carry out emergency response operations for possible calamities due to the weather disturbance.

According to state weather bureau PAGASA’s 4:00 p.m. bulletin, Domeng was last spotted 755 km East of Virac, Catanduanes with maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour at the center and gustiness of up to 60 km/h.

The weather disturbance is forecast to move north northwest at 15 km/h, PAGASA said.

PAGASA also noted that Tropical Depression Domeng may strengthen to a tropical storm by Friday although it will remain over the Pacific Ocean and will not be directly over land.

It is unlikely to develop into a typhoon but may however strengthen into a severe tropical storm.

Domeng is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Sunday. (R. Tutas)
