“Five to six” tons of garbage were collected from the three cemeteries in Tagbilaran City starting the eve of All Saints’ Day until Friday, All Souls’ Day, said a Solid Waste Management Office (SWMO) official.

According to Lito Taladua of the SWMO, the truckloads of garbage were collected from the St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Barangay Dampas and Victoria Memorial Park and the public cemetery in Barangay Taloto.

“Sukad adtong Miyerkules, balig tulo ka truck na seguro na, mga five to six tons,” said Taladua.

More piles of trash are expected to be gathered in the following days as garbage collection for the holidays will continue until Monday.

Garbage collectors could gather and take about “10 tons” of trash in total until the end of the long weekend, he added.

Taladua said that they encountered problems with the collection of garbage as three SWMO trucks malfunctioned in the past days.

“Sa pagkakaron, nagproblema mi kay adtong Huwebes sa gabii nangaguba ang tulo ka truck, ginagmay ra man pud hinuon, wa pud diha ang atong mga mekaniko kay atong gihatagan og panahon nga makaduaw pud sila,” he added.

However, Taladua noted that visitors have become more “disciplined” in disposing of garbage while personnel in cemeteries have already pre-gathered the piles of trash before these were collected.

In 2017, the SWMO collected around seven tons of garbage from the same cemeteries, said Taladua adding that there were more visitors this year. (R. Tutas)
