The official e-mail account of the Diocese of Tagbilaran has been allegedly hacked prompting the diocese’s leader, Bishop Abet Uy, to warn the public against fraudulent solicitations made under his name.

“It is very depressing to note that the official e-mail address of the Diocese of Tagbilaran has been hacked,” said Uy in a Facebook post.

According to Uy, a solicitation letter using his name has been forwarded to various individuals asking for money to support a girl in Sierra Leone who is suffering from renal failure.

The bishop noted that the email was not from him or the diocese.

“Binuang na sa mga hackers. Dili na tinuod. Pangilad aron makakuha sila’g kwarta,” Uy added.

Uy called on the public to be vigilant in answering requests for information or money through the internet or other media.

A similar incident has happened to another high-ranking Church official in the past.

In 2015, the personal email of Manila Archbishop Antonio Cardinal Tagle was hacked.

“We would like to inform everyone that the personal email account of his Eminence Cardinal Chito Tagle has been hacked or compromised. Should you receive an email from this account, please delete or disregard,” a staff of Tagle posted on the Cardinal’s Twitter account. (R. Tutas)
