A teenage woman who had suffered from a heart condition her entire life died of a heart attack after allegedly experiencing extreme stress caused by the loss of money and land through a scam.

Camiel Ann Humol, 19, of Barangay Sto. Tomas, Trinidad, succumbed to a fatal heart attack at dawn on Saturday, just four days after she tried to take her own life by attempting to slit her wrist.

The teenager’s mother, Crispina, blames a male scammer, who had duped Camiel into paying him almost P50,000, for her daughter’s death.

The con artist who only identified himself as Ramon swindled Camiel through text message by asking P50,000 as fee for her to claim a reward of P700,000—a common modus operandi carried out across the country.

“Mao g’yud nay cause [scam] sa iyang pagkamatay, dili ingon nga ang kasing kasing. Dili g’yud na kay kanang akong anak fighter g’yud na kaayo,” said Crispina.

According to Crispina, her daughter raised money with the help of her grandmother by selling land and cattle and borrowing money from relatives.

Camiel started paying money to Ramon on April 17 and was only short of P1,600 from completing the P-50,000 fee just days before her death.

“Gitawagan nako ang laki ingon ko na pangayuon nalang namo ang kwarta kay wa lagi mi intawn unya among anak naa sa ICU kinihanglan namo ang kwarta. Gi ingnan lang ko na ‘di na na mabalik ninyo bisan piso. Ugma ipadala ang P1,600 aron mapapirmahan na ni nako ni Pangulong Duterte aron ma-release na ang kwarta.’ Mao g’yud nay cause,” said Crispina.

Crispina said that Camiel was driven to get the large amount of money to fulfill her dream of finishing her studies and lift their family out of poverty.

She was also distraught after she reportedly failed to pass the entrance exam for the Trinidad Municipal College.

Camiel, out of fear for losing her family’s money and land, tried to commit suicide on Tuesday last week but was stopped by her relatives. She then became hysterical and cried until she had difficulty breathing.

According to Crispin, Camiel had already been advised by a physician not to exert herself too much as she had a hole in her heart.

Camiel was rushed to the Governor Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital where she was placed under an intensive care unit. She died of heart attack at 5 a.m. on Saturday.

Crispin said they will seek the authorities’ assistance in identifying and locating Ramon after Camiel’s burial. (AD)
