A 70-year-old man and his son were arrested by police after they allegedly beat and stabbed a fisherman who later died of his injuries following the attack in Talibon.

The suspects, Camilo Wamar, 70, and Carolino Wamar, 38, of Barangay Calituban, immediately surrendered to a barangay official following the incident at 5 p.m. on Sunday and were charged with homicide.

According to Corporal Bobby Oroyan of the Talibon Police Station, victim Jaime Cañete of the same village, was taken to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Oroyan said that based on their investigation the incident stemmed from a longstanding feud between the Wamars and Cañete.

The suspects have alleged that Cañete attacked them first with a knife and that they acted in self-defense.

“Ang allegation ani, ang victim maoy aggressor. Naa kunoy kutsilyo kaning biktima but he [suspect] was able to avoid it. Naa g’yud pud siya [suspect] samad sa dughan ug kamot. Gagmay ra nuon,” said Oroyan.

However, three witnesses said that Cañete, who appeared to have been drunk, was just murmuring until a confrontation ensued.

Camilo hit Cañete’s head with a wood while Carolino repeatedly stabbed him with a bolo.

“Based sa pasiunang investigation sa kapulisan ug statement sa witnesses, mga residente sa maong lugar, base sa ilang nasaksihan ang biktima nakainom, murmuring. Gapadungog dungog sa mga suspect,” said Oroyan.

“Camilo with a hardwood, without justifiable reason, he used it to strike the head of the victim which sent the victim to the ground. Carilon who was at the rear side of his father, in possession of the bolo, when he saw the victim laid on the ground, he used the bolo to stab the victim several times which resulted to the death of the person,” Oroyan added based on the witnesses’ testimonies.
