A 74-year-old man burned his room and allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself inside his family’s home in Sagbayan after his son threatened to eat his pigeon, police said.

Melchor Navarro of Barangay Poblacion, Sagbayan was found hanging from the ceiling by his son Mel Eric at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, said Corporal Aldrich Añabieza of the Sagbayan Police Station.

This was a day after Melchor and his other son Mel John figured in a heated argument.

“Kadtong alas dos sa udto nagkalalis ni sila sa iyang anak si Mel John Navarro. Ang hinungdan ra pud ani kanang kalapati. Kay mura’g giingnan siya na ihawon ang iyang [Melchor] kalapati kay himuong pulutan maong nagkalalis ni sila pero wa gyud ingon na nagdinapatay,” said Añabieza.

According to Añabieza, the siblings woke up to a fire early on Tuesday and had to put it out before they found Melchor’s lifeless body hanging from the ceiling at their kitchen.

 “Before ni siya naghikog iya pa unang gisunog ang kwarto niya. Pero gamay ra nuon pud ni na sunog iyaha rang kwarto dapit. ‘Nya gipaw’ng ni sa iyang mga anak,” said Añabieza.

There were no indications of foul play based on the examination of Municipal Health Officer Dr. Gerry Dimandante.

Añabieza said that the fire, based on the probe of the Bureau of Fire Protection, only left P5,000 worth of damages.

“Gamay ra hinuon pud na sunog, iyaha rang kwarto dapit…Mga sanina ra man niya ug ubang butang nasunog,” he added. (C. Remolador)
