A noted thief landed in the hospital after he was shot by police as he allegedly resisted arrest during a hot pursuit operation in Ubay on Monday morning.
The elusive suspect, identified as Orlando Dela Peña, 25, tried to get the pistol of arresting officer Staff Sgt. Dennis Orivillo prompting Corporal Martin Bonato to shoot him. He was hit in his left leg and stomach, said Master Sgt. Renato Cutaran of the Ubay Police Station.
Dele Peña was rushed to Governor Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital in Tagbilaran City where he was placed under hospital arrest.
According to Cutaran, they launched the hot pursuit operation against Dela Peña after he stole a bag containing P27,000 cash from a delivery truck which had just disembarked from a vessel at the Ubay port.
Dela Peña was caught by the driver and his companions but he was able to run and escape after jumping into the sea.
“Nasakpan nila gigukod siya unya pagka corner, mi ambak man sa dagat unya mi langoy man. Wa g’yud nadakpan. Kusog kaayo mo dagan, maayo kaayo mo langoy,” Cutaran said.
Police found Dela Pena on Monday morning and arrested him but he was able to escape.
“Dihang pagbalik gikan medical midagan siya pagnaog sa patrol mao to higayuna na amo napud siyang gipangita,” he said.
Dela Peña was located by police again on the same day. As police arrested him, he resisted arrest and ended up getting shot twice.
As of Tuesday morning, he was already in stable condition. (with C. Remolador)
