A Boholano doctor based in the US died after he and his wife figured in a multi-vehicle road mishap in Las Vegas on Sunday evening (Manila time).
The fatality identified as Dr. Marcial Escobia, 67, brother of Augustus Escobia, the Bohol Capitol’s communications head, was rushed to the University Medical Center in Las Vegas but he succumbed to multiple injuries at 5 a.m. on Monday.
His wife Nimfa who was with him inside the car remained in critical condition while four others on board several other vehicles including a commuter bus which were involved in the crash were also rushed to various hospitals in the area.
The Escobias were reportedly on their way to hear Mass when they figured in the multi-vehicle crash.
Police told the Las-Vegas Review Journal that a vehicle beat a red light at an intersection “with high rate of speed” and hit a crossing vehicle at the intersecting lane.
The vehicle that was hit collided with three other vehicles including a Regional Transportation Commission bus.
Capt. Jason Letkiewicz of the Metropolitan Police Department said that the multi-vehicle crash may have been caused by human impairment, noting that the driver of the vehicle which instigated the incident smelled of alcohol.
The driver of the said vehicle was hospitalized but only sustained minor injuries. A blood sample was taken from him but results were still awaited.
“The issue here is the decision somebody made to drive after drinking,” Letkiewicz was quoted as saying by the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “It’s unacceptable that people continue to make this decision to drive drunk.”
Meanwhile, it was not yet known whether or not Escobia’s wife was already released from the intensive care unit.
Escobia was a resident doctor at the Governor Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital in Tagbilaran City before migrating to Nevada where he worked as a nurse.
He was an alumnus of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Tagbilaran City and was an active member of the Brotherhood of Christian Businessmen and Professionals’ (BCBP) chapter in Las Vegas.
