Despite being short-lived, freedom came at a hefty price for one detainee of the Bohol District Jail (BDJ) who tried to escape from authorities.

Renato Dico, 31, ended up in the hospital on Tuesday with bullet wounds in his body, foot and genitals after bolting from jail guards at the Hall of Justice in Tagbilaran City during a hearing on a rape charge filed against him.

According to a police report, Dico was shot by PO2 Marlon Hinay of the San Isidro Police Station who assisted jail guards in pursuing the fleeing detainee.

Dico, allegedly armed with a knife, resisted arrest prompting the policeman to fire his weapon, authorities said.

The suspect, a resident of Clarin town, travelled some .4 kilometers from the Hall of Justice before he was subdued by policemen and jail guards near the Development Bank of the Philippines in the capital.

According to BDJ warden Chief Insp. Felipe Montejo, Dico was escorted by three jail guards inside Branch 3, Hall of Justice when the incident happened.

Montejo said that Dico was not handcuffed as he was already inside the courtroom when he suddenly zoomed past the jail guards and exited the establishment.

BDJ authorities and policemen in the area immediately ran after the fleeing detainee and were able corner him at 12:15p.m. on the same day.

Dico is reportedly now in stable condition and is currently recuperating at the Governor Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital in Tagbilaran City.

Authorities said that tight security measures have been implemented at the hospital to secure the escapee.

Montejo said that Dico was likely to have been desperate to escape due to marital issues with his wife.
